I was born in King City, Ca., the second of four children. We grew up riding horses, raising 4-H animals, building fence and, as teenagers, working various jobs in the family's newspaper and printing business. Hard work and leadership were encouraged. Creativity was the norm: My grandmother was an artist and writer, my dad was a writer and all of my siblings grew up to be musicians, writers, printers and makers.
After high school, I went off to college to earn my stripes as a journalist. I left school before graduation, joining the staff of a daily newspaper in California's central valley, which was exploding with growth. There, I covered beats ranging from crime to water issues and education, and learned how to ask questions and think about others' perspectives. Eventually, I left to start a public relations and design firm specializing in print media. Within a few years, the firm had morphed into a full-service agency and was thriving.
I wandered into my first clay class with the intention of injecting a little fun and creative exploration not tied to satisfying clients' needs. Instead, I found a whole new world - and have been exploring its various paths ever since. After exhausting the local clay scene, I took intensive seminars and workshops at Arrowmont School of Art and Craft in Tennessee, Sierra Nevada College in Nevada and Mendocino Art Center in California.
Since 2007, I've been living and working in Cambria, Ca., an artists colony on the central coast.
