He led us through our paces, explaining each step of the sgraffito process, and directing us in creating a stamped and etched celtic knot. The project gave us a chance to try out various texture tools and techniques.
The illustrative nature of his work is an extension of a long career in graphic design and illustration. Today, his imagery varies from quirky and fun, to political and dark. All of it contains exquisite detail, evidence of his fertile imagination.
I loved this part of the tour and would have enjoyed more time with Darren. Though sgraffito is part of my process, he introduced some tools and variations that were new to me. I’m looking forward to trying them out. Experimentation is truly fuel for new excitement in the studio.
